IQCG#29 - Incredible India

Dear Friends,

Running a challenge is blog is not that easy, if you don't have a good crew.

I am lucky enough to get a good set of DTs who traveled and traveling along with me in the journey of quilling and special thanks to our sponsors who have been very supportive to motivate the contestants by sending out lovely gifts.

Coming to the challenge theme of IQCG. As we celebrate the 70th Independence day this August and the name behind our blog, this month is dedicated to our country.

Indian Culture is the ancient and more than 5000 yrs old. Unity in diversity is our Mantra. Cultural heritage differs from state to state in India. India is a country that represents for cultural heritage, ancient monuments, literary arts, visual arts, schemes, programmes, performing arts, fairs and festivals, handicraft and many more.

The challenge is to create anything that represents our country

As I come from the state Kerala -  Fondly referred to as ‘God’s Own Country. Classical art forms, colourful festivals, exotic cuisine are some of the cultural marvels of Kerala

I have decided to create something which represents Kerala's culture.
From childhood, i admire the kathakali dance and chendamelam .

Kathakali is a classical art form of Kerala is a spectacular blend of dance, drama, mime and song presents the story themes derived from the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and other Hindu epics, myths and legends. The dance aspect consists of pure dance and as well as mime.Facial expressions by artists will be fresh in your mind

Kathakali face was my longing desire to quill.

Altered Frame art

Dear friends,

This month at IQCG, the challenge i have set is to stencils in your work and add quilling to it.

My inspiration is a mixed media altered art. My blog friend sathya sent me this frame an year ago in RAK. have never attempted to alter it. :P
Took it over and did this.

A small step by step tutorial on mixed media frame

1. Mask the portion which you don't want to get coloured
2. Then i painted the entire frame with Itsy bitsy white texture paint and allowed it to dry.
3. Then stenciled it with texture paint using damask stencil to creature textures
4. Fixed quilled flowers and flourishes on the sides and again stenciled it with sakura modelling paste
5. Painted again with texture paint and allowed it to dry
6. Mixed the blue fabric colours in the sprayer and sprayed it completely.
7. Now remove the masking tape and wipe the portion with tissue if any spill over is there
8. let it dry for an hour and then decorate it as you wish.

Since i was experimenting, couldn't click pictures. Experts bear with me if i am wrong.

Sathya - hope i have not spoiled it

Post your works with stencil here at Indian quilling challenge blog

Quilled Wedding Keepsakes

Dear Friends,

Marriage is a turning point in each one life from where you are stepping into a new life, new love, new relations and of course the new you.

Wedding keepsakes will be good gift for the couples to remember their joyous moments.

In Hindu religion, a ritual named Sapthapadi - Which i love the most. The Vows taken by both bridegroom and bride. Most of us doesn't know the meaning, we blindly obey the Poojari's words.

Here are the seven vows of the Hindu Marriage

Let us take the first step to provide for our household
a nourishing and pure diet, avoiding those foods injurious to healthy living.

Let us take the second step to develop physical, mental and spiritual powers.

Let us take the third step to increase our wealth
by righteous means and proper use.

Let us take the fourth step to acquire knowledge,
happiness and harmony by mutual love and trust.

Let us take the fifth step, so that we be blessed
with strong, virtuous and heroic children.

Let us take the sixth step for self-restraint and longevity.
Finally, let us take the seventh step and be true companions
and remain lifelong partners by this wedlock."

We have taken the Seven Steps. You have become mine forever.
Yes, we have become partners. I have become yours.

Made a Simple design to give importance to the wordings. Quilled manadala to give peace and mirror to commit themselves to the vows. Knowing the meaning of sapthapadi will increase the bond between the couples.

Quilled Om

Dear Friends,

Today we celebrate Maha Sivarathri in India. Mahashivaratri is not only a ritual but also a cosmic definition of the Hindu universe. It dispels ignorance, emanates the light of knowledge, makes one aware of the universe, ushers in the spring after the cold and dry winter, and invokes the supreme power to take cognizance of the beings that were created by him.

Here I would like share you the Quilled Om which i created during last Maha Sivarathri. Used distress inks for colouring.

Let divine energy flow through you with blessing of Lord Siva.

Indian Quilling challenge

Hello Indian quillers,

Recently we celebrated 68th Independence day, to celebrate this occasion and pay tribute to our great leaders, I have announced a Challenge / contest in Indian Quilling Blog – Anything goes with Indian Flag Colours(all the colours)

Here is my post on what I have made......

As I have mentioned earlier, I would like bring our Indian culture in Quilling.

India’s diverse traditions and cultures is what makes exploring this incredible nation so unique. With such an array of cultures there come tremendous styles of embroideries, each so very unique and distinct in its own way, that one could spend their entire life exploring them. Each state of India offers its own style of thread work and over the years Indian embroidery has become a rage all across the globe. One can spot it being incorporated in all sorts of things, from garments to accessories, shawls to footwear, home furnishings to decorations, you name it and you will find it.

Kashmiri embroidery is well known for the beauty of its colour, texture, design and technique. Probably, the best-known Indian embroidery is the 'Kashida of Kashmir'. This embroidery is revealed in shawls and in cottage industry done by the members of families in Srinagar. This embroidery enhanced the beauty of Kashmiri shawls, silk sarees, dress materials, cushion covers, bed covers, purses, veils and articles of personal and daily use. There is no way one can compare the Kashmiri embroidery with any thing else. The motifs used in kashmiri embroidery is mostly taken from nature.

I have tried the floral embroidery design of Kashmiri embroidery in quilling.

Hope this inspires you all.

So post your work around this theme in Indian Quilling Challenge blog. Entries will close by 31st August.

Thanks for visiting.

Quilled Kollam

Hi Friends,

My Today's Post is on a Handmade Wall decor which I made for inspiration in Indian Quilling Challenge - Theme is Anything Goes with Geometrical shapes

Kolam, a traditional south Indian art. Kolam is a geometrical drawing composed of curved loops drawn around a grid pattern of dots. It is sometimes called Rangoli and can be very elaborate and colorful. Kolams originated about 2500 BC in the Indus Valley Civilization.

In Tamilnadu, one would find a finest drawn and artistic drawing decorating every house at the front entrance. These drawings are not just merely a decoration, but it has lot more significance to this practice. During festival seasons and on any auspicious functions, the drawing is drawn still larger even extending up to the street!

There are many form of kolam. I have chosen Kambi Kolam / Chikku Kolam - My mom's favorite art. In this art form of kolam, dots called pulli are arranged in rhombic, square, triangular, or free shapes and a single, uninterrupted linear or curvilinear line, called the kambi, intertwines the dots.

I always do mistakes while drawing this type of kolam(maths, calculation & etc). But Challenged myself to try kambi kolam in quilling.

Here is my work on Quilled kambi kolam / Quilled Rangoli

Quilled giraffe

Hi friends,

My today's post is on a quilled giraffe frame. A handmade wall frame for kids room.

Customised it for a friend for her kids room. I didn't have the green colour to paint the background. Remembered that I had kept some colour bottles in the waste basket of my little daughter(she is a 3yr old and naughty enough to mix all the colours and would imprint it on a notebook, wall, dress, floor), got a poster colour bottle, in which she had mixed  - white, black and green and it was in dried condition. Managed to use it here.

Quilled Ganesha frame

Hi Friends,

I am here today to share with you a Quilled Ganesha frame which was made to order by my friend. Many of us would be in doubt on which paper to be used as a base for quilled frames. I would suggest to use Mount board sheet. You can increase the height up to our quilled work by fixing the mount board one on one. So that if you give to a frame shop, your quilled artwork won't be disturbed.

Painted the background with orange & yellow water colours and varnished it with Camelin paper varnish. It would be perfect gift idea for housing warming ceremony.
