Hi friends,
Many quillers would be Googling always to know more about waterproof for quilled jewellery. Here is the solution which i found recently after many experiments.
Take your finished quilled earring / jewellery, before adding it to the findings, coat it with diluted Fevicol MR(mix with little water) or the glue which you are using. Allow it to dry completely. Now take a flat brush and clear lacquer(Brand - ICI ).(it will be available in any paint shop). Coat your quilled jewellery with lacquer and allow it to dry in open place for a day. While coating try to do it in a ventilated area, sometimes the smell of the lacquer will suffocates. (Try Camilin Picture Varnish /Asian paints synthetic clear varnish(not good for white & light colours) too - almost same results)
You don't believe your eyes after seeing the end product, it hardens like plastic and is more attractive. I tried it under running tap water but nothing happened to it. is this the result you are searching for so don't wait, try it once and give your feedback. Here are my finished quilled earrings.
Hope you have noticed the glaze on it.
Thanks for visiting.
PS: If my works inspires you or you want to recreate, Pls do give a direct link to my post because i put my hard work in each and every design I make. Hope you all understand.
Your quilled pieces are more attractive. Lacquer gives a glossy effect. Thank you for sharing.

DeleteThank you shylaa. But the smell of varnish is not going even after a week? You do anything for that. Could you please share? Varnish can be applied for quilled necklace also? Since I am going to sell outside I am little concerned about using Midge lodge and varnish on quilled jewelry. Sorry to bother.
Deletenot a problem Suja, Keep the varnished piece in open air, the smell goes off, use very thin coat of varnish. i don't have any clue about midge lodge
DeleteThank you very much. Sorry it was a typing mistake, it is modge podge which I use before applying varnish.
DeleteAre these pieces for sale? they are really beautiful..

Hi Shyla a quick question here I use the same Fevicol MR diluted in water to make my jewelry sturdy and for thr gloss I do use Asian paints varnish diluted with thinner but the problem is after I add the jewelry findings its getting discolored and becomes dull (the jewelry findings loose their luster and looks like antique findibs where want the look same not to discolor.)
ReplyDeleteHi prathima,
Deletecheck with the quality of thinner
Hello Shylaa Ji
ReplyDeleteReading the question above means that we can apply synthetic varnish over the findings too..? Is that so...i feel findings get tarnished when exposed to air and other external agents if a coat of varnish
is there to act as a barrier think it should be fine...i m in middle of finishing a set on order and m in a fix do i or do i not...kindly reply..here i m talking about Asian Paint Clear Synthetic Varnish..
Hi arpita,
Deletecheck with the quality of thinner. fix the finding once the product dries completely
Hi What is your opinion regarding the possibilities of selling quilling jewellery through online. Is the market trend still exist?
ReplyDeletefluctuating market remmya, not so good as earlier
DeleteHello shylaa Ji,
ReplyDeleteYour information is really very helpful... Thank you very much... But I have one question.. Which thinner we can use to dilute the varnish???
Any thinner is fine shweta
DeleteHi I made paper quilling stud earrings, but when itried by putting the earring, the stud base is coming out.it is not fixing strongly.can u please suggest how to fix stud base firmly, so that it cant come.
ReplyDeletei use fabric glue to fix the stud base. it works well
DeleteHi In my paper quilled jumkas the stud base is not fixing strongly,.when I tried the stud base is coming out.can u please suggest what to use and how 2 use
ReplyDeletehi swathi - for stud base to fix i use normal fabric glue, it is strong enough.
DeleteHi...your work is really nice but how to get a matte finish for the jewellery
ReplyDeletefor matte finish - use matte finish mediums available in camlin brand
DeleteHi Shyla :-)
ReplyDeleteI have a question regarding the lacquer- is it perfectly clear? So far I've used Asian paints clear synthetic and it has a yellowish color which is unsuitable for light colored pieces. Is ICI lacquer better for white and light colored pieces?
Thanks in advance. :-)
-Anu
hi anuja,
Deletelacquer is clear. try any decoupage varnish(any brand) for white coloured jewellery
Sometimes i doubt, is it good to have quilled jewelry to be like paper or plastic after varnishing? if it gives plastic look, what is the use of quilling?
ReplyDeleteMost of the glues/sealant make it plastic. But i could see Modpodge does retain the paper finish. But it is water -resistant , not water proof.
Please let me know which way the quilled jewellery should be looking to sell custoemrs? Plastic or Paper look.
hi shirley, i too had asked this question many times to myself, but as a customer point of view, the products life time is important. hence i opt for water proofing

ReplyDelete1st we have to take fevicol and mix some water in it and then ............?
Hi Shylaa, I love the earrings. i have a question. I recently mixed fevicol with 2-3 drops of water and applied it on my quilling. It was left overnight. Then I coated it with Quilling Shiner (Varnish) and I could see some white flaky formation. Should I not use varnish over fevicol? Please help !
